CHAPTER FIVE

SAM

Following Margot and Bailey around isn’t how my day was supposed to start, but I can’t really complain. I was a stalker for six months, after all. Having my privileges revoked because Bailey moved into our house has left a void in my routine.

But my escapades pass without a hitch. The sisters spend a couple hours in the mall, doing shopping and drinking overpriced coffee. They walk in empty-handed and leave with a trunk full of gear.

Good for them.

With the shit they’ve gone through, they deserve some time to themselves. When the shopping’s done and dusted, I follow them home. If no one made a move in the mall, I doubt they’d have the balls to do it on the open road.

I watch Bailey drive through the main gate of the house, and I’d love to follow in behind her. Instead, I continue driving and don’t stop until I’m in New York City. I park my car outside a high-end apartment block overlooking Central Park. The building screams super-villain lair with its dark colors and neo-gothic styling.

But hey, I’m here for one thing, and one thing only. The sooner I get it, the better.

“Mr. Marshall. You’re early,” the doorman says as I step inside.

Brody McAllister has been Donovan’s doorman for over ten years. His rail-thin frame supports an enormous head, with bug eyes peering out of two deep sockets. He’s a ghastly figure of what once was a man turned into a demon’s puppet.

“Brody.” We don’t shake hands by choice. I can’t stand his clammy grip. “I’d rather be early than keep Donovan waiting.”

“Well, he already is,” Brody huffs. “He’s been waiting all morning.”

“Why are you keeping him waiting, then? Let me go up.”

Brody’s eyelids narrow. “Don’t take that tone with me, son.”

At twenty-odd years my senior, I suppose Brody could’ve been my dad. But, I feel sorry for anything he spawns.

He lifts a phone to his ear and dials a number. A few rings go by before he speaks. “Mister Dwight, the imbecile, is here to see you.”

He mouth’s “Donovan’s words, not mine”. I roll my eyes.

“I’ll send him straight up.” Brody hangs up the call. “Guns at the door, Samuel.”

“What happened to Mr. Marshall?” I ask. “It sounded better coming from an underling.”

“Guns at the door,” Brody grumbles.

I remove my pistol and hand it to Brody. He shoves it into a box underneath his desk.

I start walking to the elevator, before he gives me the formal go-ahead.

I reach the top floor and make my way over to Donovan’s apartment. Why he chose to sit down with me here and not his office is beyond me. I’m met by two of his men at the front door. They’re both dressed in black, wearing dark sunglasses, and both have slick-backed hairdos. If I didn’t know them personally, I’d say they were twins. But one’s a dumbass from South Carolina, the other is a moron from Texas.

“Morning, fellas,” I say.

They don’t speak, not even to greet me. The two men escort me through the apartment and to the home office.
